Bitcoin halving explained in one sentence: every four years the reward paid to miners for each new block is cut in half, so new bitcoin enters the world at half the previous speed. The last one happened on 20 April 2024 and cut the reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC per block. The next one is expected around April 2028, at block 1,050,000, when the reward drops again to 1.5625 BTC. That is the entire mechanism. It is written into the software, it needs nobody's permission, and it is the reason the total supply stops at 21 million coins forever.
Why it matters for your francs is a smaller story than WhatsApp groups tell you. Less new supply, with demand steady or rising, has come before large price increases in the past. It has never come immediately, and never in a straight line. The halving does not pay you anything. It does not change today's rate, it does not protect your savings this month, and it is not a reason to buy more bitcoin than you can afford to forget about for several years. What it does give you is a good reason to think in years instead of weeks. Below is the mechanism in plain English, what actually happened after each past halving, and what our desk tells clients in Douala and Yaounde who ask whether they should buy before 2028.
Bitcoin halving explained: what actually happens on the network?
Bitcoin transactions are grouped into blocks. Miners compete to add the next block, and the network aims for one new block roughly every ten minutes. The winner collects two things: the fees people paid to have their transactions included, and a block subsidy of brand new coins created out of nothing. That subsidy is the only way new bitcoin is ever born.
Every 210,000 blocks, the software cuts that subsidy in half. At ten minutes a block, 210,000 blocks take about four years. Nobody votes on it. No committee approves it. The rule sits in the same code that every node on the planet runs, and a node that tried to pay itself more would simply be ignored by everyone else. If you want to read the original design, it is set out in Satoshi Nakamoto's 2008 paper.
The result is a fixed btc supply schedule that anyone can check in advance. The subsidy started at 50 coins per block in 2009. It is 3.125 today. It will keep halving until it rounds to zero somewhere around the year 2140, and by then 21 million coins will exist and never one more. Close to 95 percent of that total has already been mined. Everything still to come will trickle out over the next century.
This is the part that matters for a Cameroonian saver, and it has nothing to do with price predictions. The FCFA supply is managed by BEAC. The naira supply is managed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The dollar supply is managed by the Federal Reserve. The bitcoin supply is managed by arithmetic. You can disagree about what bitcoin is worth, but you cannot argue with how many will exist.
When is the next bitcoin halving?
The next halving happens at block height 1,050,000. Current estimates put that around 17 April 2028, and most countdowns give a window of a few days on either side because the date moves with mining speed. If miners add hash power, blocks arrive slightly faster and the date pulls forward. If they switch machines off, it drifts later. You can watch the live countdown on the CoinGecko halving page.
At that moment the block reward falls from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC. Daily issuance drops from roughly 450 new coins to roughly 225. In francs, at an interbank dollar of about 562 XAF and a bitcoin around 77,700 dollars, that is the difference between roughly 19.6 billion FCFA of new supply a day and roughly 9.8 billion. It is a real change to the flow of new coins. It is also a change the whole market has known about since 2009.
What did past halvings do to the price?
Four halvings have happened. That is four data points, which is a story, not a statistic. Here is the shape of it, with prices rounded and approximate.
| Halving | Date | New block reward | BTC price around the halving | Cycle high that followed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | 28 November 2012 | 25 BTC | about 12 dollars | about 1,100 dollars in late 2013 |
| Second | 9 July 2016 | 12.5 BTC | about 650 dollars | about 19,700 dollars in December 2017 |
| Third | 11 May 2020 | 6.25 BTC | about 8,600 dollars | about 69,000 dollars in November 2021 |
| Fourth | 20 April 2024 | 3.125 BTC | about 64,000 dollars | 126,198 dollars on 6 October 2025 |
| Fifth | expected April 2028 | 1.5625 BTC | unknown | unknown |
Two honest observations. The big move never arrived on halving day. In each cycle the high came twelve to eighteen months later, and in every case there was a brutal drawdown before it. Anyone who bought during halving excitement and needed the money six months later lost. The second observation is that the percentage gains have shrunk each cycle. A market worth over a trillion dollars cannot multiply the way a market worth a few million could in 2012.
Does the halving price effect still work in 2026?
Be careful here, because this is where people lose money. The halving price effect is not a law. It is a pattern from four events, and every market participant on earth has already read the same charts. Information everybody has in advance tends to be reflected in the price in advance.
Look at what actually moved bitcoin this month. On 21 August 2026 it jumped above 77,000 dollars on a short squeeze and regulatory news out of the United States. On 29 August 2026 it fell about 3.3 percent to around 77,678 dollars after comments from the Federal Reserve raised the odds of a rate hike. Neither move had anything to do with the supply schedule. Interest rates, regulation and large buyers set the price day to day. The halving sits quietly in the background over years. We wrote about the francs side of this in why the bitcoin price in FCFA differs from what you see online, and about last week's move in the August 2026 rally.

What does the halving change for your FCFA savings?
Less than most people hope, and that is fine. The FCFA is pegged to the euro at 655.957, so a Cameroonian saver does not face the sudden currency collapse that our Nigerian clients have lived through. Your problem is not overnight devaluation. Your problem is that a savings account pays almost nothing while school fees, rent and imported goods keep climbing.
Bitcoin is one possible answer to that, and it is a volatile one. It has fallen more than 50 percent from a high three separate times. If you might need the money inside two years, it is the wrong tool, and no halving changes that. For money you need to keep stable and reachable, dollar stablecoins do a different job: we compare the two honestly in saving in USDT versus FCFA, and you can start there through our USDT page.
The practical split our desk sees work looks like this. Money for the next twelve months stays in francs or USDT. Money you are genuinely putting away for years can carry bitcoin risk. The halving is a reason to be patient with that second bucket, not a reason to enlarge it.
Should you buy bitcoin before the 2028 halving?
Buy on a schedule, not on a countdown. The clients who did best through the 2024 cycle were not the ones who timed anything. They were the ones putting 25,000 or 50,000 FCFA in every month through MTN MoMo without thinking about it, in green weeks and red ones. The clients who struggled were the ones who sent us one large panic order at the loudest point of the hype, then messaged three months later asking whether to sell at a loss.
Two rules from the desk. Never borrow to buy, and never put in school fees or rent. We have had to talk more than one trader out of both, and the halving story is exactly the kind of narrative that makes borrowing feel reasonable. If you are starting from zero, our guide to buying bitcoin in Cameroon walks through the steps, and the free one on one mentorship exists precisely so that nobody has to learn this from a Telegram group.
How do scammers use halving hype in Cameroon?
Every cycle brings the same three offers, and they will get louder as 2028 approaches. First, the "halving bonus" that promises to double coins you send to a wallet before the event. Nothing doubles anything. The halving cuts miner rewards and touches your balance in no way at all. Second, the fake mining investment paying a fixed monthly percentage in FCFA, which is a Ponzi structure wearing mining vocabulary. Third, the group admin with a screenshot showing enormous gains, offering to trade on your behalf.
Our safety guide sets out the checks that stop all three, and Telegram crypto scams targeting Cameroonians shows the exact scripts in use this year. The short version: nobody who is genuinely making money needs your capital, and a real counterparty has a name, a phone number and a history you can verify.
