In this guide
The fastest way to buy bitcoin in Cameroon in 2026 is through a trusted OTC (over-the-counter) desk: you send MTN MoMo, Orange Money or a bank transfer, and bitcoin lands in your own wallet in minutes, with the rate agreed before you pay. The alternatives are P2P marketplaces like Binance P2P, international exchanges (where cards and bank funding rarely work for CEMAC customers), local street agents, and voucher services. Each method trades off speed, fees and safety differently.
Our desk has traded bitcoin for Cameroonians on WhatsApp since 2018, so this guide is not theory. It is what we see work, and fail, every single week: which methods lose people money, where the hidden fees sit, and how to pick the right option for your amount. If you just want a live price, check today's rates or start a trade on our WhatsApp desk.
What are the 5 ways to buy bitcoin in Cameroon?
| Method | Speed | Typical all-in cost | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| OTC desk (WhatsApp) | 5 to 20 minutes | Quoted spread, no surprises | Choosing a fake desk |
| P2P marketplace | 15 to 60 minutes | Spread + occasional bad fills | Scam counterparties, frozen MoMo |
| International exchange | Days, if at all | Card/deposit often fails | Funding simply not available |
| Street agent | Same day | Widest, unverifiable spreads | No recourse if it goes wrong |
| Voucher/gift card swap | Hours | Double conversion losses | Worst effective rate |
The rest of this guide walks through each one, then explains how to judge which is right for your situation.
How does buying from an OTC desk work?
An OTC desk is a broker you deal with directly, usually over WhatsApp. You say how much FCFA you want to convert, the desk quotes you a fixed rate, you pay by MoMo, Orange Money or bank transfer, and the desk sends bitcoin straight to your wallet address.
Three things make this the default choice for most people we serve:
- The rate is locked before you pay. No slippage between payment and delivery, which matters when the market moves fast.
- One conversation, real accountability. A desk that has operated publicly for years, under a real name, cannot vanish on one trade without destroying its business.
- It works with the payment methods Cameroonians actually have. No Visa card requirement, no SWIFT wire, no waiting on a foreign bank.
The catch: the entire model rests on the desk being honest. A fake "desk" on WhatsApp looks identical to a real one until your money is gone. Before sending anything, read our guide on how to stay safe from bitcoin scams, and see the walkthrough of the full process on our buy bitcoin in Cameroon page.
Is Binance P2P still worth it in Cameroon?
P2P marketplaces match you with an individual seller and hold the crypto in escrow until you confirm payment. On paper that solves trust. In practice, our desk spends part of every week helping people recover from P2P trades that went sideways.
The recurring problems we see:
- Third-party payment scams. A seller asks you to receive money into your MoMo from a stranger, and your line gets flagged when that money turns out to be stolen. Some clients have had numbers blocked for weeks.
- Payment released, coins never confirmed. Timing games around the escrow window catch beginners constantly.
- Thin weekend liquidity. The advertised "best price" often sits behind sellers with high minimums or bad completion rates, and the realistic price is worse than a desk quote.
P2P can work if you are experienced, patient and trading small amounts. If you use it, never trade outside escrow and never accept payments from accounts that do not match the counterparty's verified name. We cover the MoMo side of these traps in our MoMo scams guide.
Why do international exchanges rarely work from Cameroon?
Coinbase, Kraken and similar platforms are built around funding rails Cameroon does not reliably have: local card processing, SEPA, ACH or fast bank integrations. As of July 2026, most CEMAC-issued cards fail on deposit, and the accounts that do open often stall at verification. Banks in the CEMAC zone remain restricted from servicing crypto businesses under the regional regulator's cautious stance, which is why direct bank funding is effectively unavailable. That restriction is supervisory, not criminal: we explain the difference in is bitcoin legal in Cameroon.
Where exchanges genuinely shine is as a research and price-reference layer. Sites like CoinGecko show the global BTC price in real time, which you should always know before accepting any local quote. The gap between the global price and your local quote is the spread, and understanding it is the single best negotiating tool you have.
What about street agents and voucher swaps?
Cash agents exist in Douala and Yaounde, often working from phone shops or forex corners. Some are honest. The structural problem is that nothing about the trade is verifiable: no fixed identity, no trade history, no recourse. The spreads we hear from clients who used agents are consistently the widest in the market, and disputes end with nobody to call.
Voucher routes (buying a gift card or prepaid voucher, then swapping it for bitcoin) stack two conversions on top of each other, and you lose margin on both. If you already hold gift cards, selling them directly for FCFA almost always beats converting them into crypto first.
Which method should you choose for your amount?
From thousands of trades, here is the honest matrix we give clients:
- Under 50,000 XAF: any reputable route works; optimize for convenience. MoMo to a desk is the least friction. See exactly how on our buy bitcoin with MoMo page.
- 50,000 XAF to 1M XAF: OTC desk, full stop. The locked rate and single point of accountability outweigh everything else at this range.
- Above 1M XAF: OTC with a desk that can split settlement across MoMo and bank rails, because MoMo daily limits become the binding constraint. Agree the split before you start.
- You want dollars, not volatility: consider USDT instead of bitcoin. Most of our import and school-fees clients hold USDT and only touch BTC for the long term.
Whatever you choose, the discipline is the same: know the global price, get the full quote in writing, verify the counterparty, and never let anyone rush you. Cameroon consistently ranks in the top tier of African crypto adoption in Chainalysis' global adoption research, which means liquidity is real, but it also means scammers fish here daily.
