To pay school fees UK from Cameroon you have four realistic routes: a bank wire from a Cameroonian bank, a money transfer operator like Western Union or Ria, the university's own payment portal such as Flywire, Convera or TransferMate, or a local desk that settles the invoice in pounds and sends you the receipt. For most families moving between 2,000,000 and 12,000,000 FCFA, the portal and the desk are the only two that reliably land before a CAS deadline. The bank wire is the one that gets held for documents. The money transfer operator is the one that caps out halfway through the amount.

The UK is harder than Canada for one specific reason: two money clocks run at once. The university wants a tuition deposit in its account before it will issue your CAS, the reference number without which you cannot even start the visa application. Separately, UK Visas and Immigration wants a different pile of money sitting untouched in a bank account for 28 consecutive days. Families routinely satisfy the first by emptying the account meant to satisfy the second, then get refused. Below: the four routes compared, real costs in francs at August 2026 rates, how the CAS deposit and the 28 day rule collide, and the four failures our desk untangles every intake season.

What are the ways to pay school fees UK from Cameroon?

Here is how the four routes compare on the things that decide whether your fees land in time. Costs are typical ranges our desk sees on Cameroonian files, not quotes, and every provider reprices.

Typical speed5 to 15 working daysMinutes to 2 days2 to 5 working days once fundedSame day to 2 days
Typical all in cost6% to 12% plus fixed charges5% to 9%1% to 3% markup on the rate2% to 5%

Main failure modeHeld or returned for documentsAmount split into many transfersYou cannot fund it from CameroonChoosing an unverified desk

Read the funding row twice, because it is the trap nobody sees coming. Flywire, Convera and TransferMate are good systems and their markup is genuinely the lowest on this table. The catch is that they are payment rails, not funding rails: they expect money pushed in from a card or a bank account allowed to send internationally. If your Cameroonian card is domestic only, or your branch refuses the outbound transfer, the cheapest option on paper is one you can never start. We have watched families lose ten days discovering this.

How much does a UK student file actually cost in FCFA?

Tuition is only part of what leaves the country. Price the whole file before you commit to any route, because the visa side is not optional and it is not small.

As of August 2026 the pound trades near 765 FCFA. That is not a coincidence: the CFA franc is pegged to the euro at 655.957, so the pound moves against your francs exactly as it moves against the euro. Using 765 FCFA to the pound, here is what a single student outside London faces.

Confirm all of those figures yourself before you move anything, on the official UK student visa money requirements and the healthcare surcharge rates pages. They change without much warning and agents in Douala repeat old figures for months.

Now add tuition. A taught master's for international students commonly sits between £15,000 and £25,000 a year, and your offer letter is the only figure that matters. On the maintenance side the rule is blunt: tuition you have already paid can be deducted from what you must show, but only if the university confirms it in writing on the CAS. That single line is worth several million francs to you, so ask for it explicitly.

For the transfer itself, our pay school fees abroad page covers how we handle UK invoices and CAS deposits, and current pricing sits on the rates page. If you want the exact francs figure for your offer letter, get a live quote on WhatsApp with the invoice in front of you.

One cost families forget is the MoMo leg. Withdrawing seven or eight million francs in cash to hand over somewhere costs real money in withdrawal charges, plus the 0.2% state levy that applies across mobile money. Paying straight from your mobile money balance to a desk skips the cash withdrawal entirely, which at tuition size is worth tens of thousands of francs.

What is a CAS deposit and why does it fail?

The CAS, or Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, is a reference number the university issues once it is satisfied you are real and funded. No CAS, no visa application. Most UK universities will not issue one until a tuition deposit has cleared, commonly a few thousand pounds or a fixed share of the first year, set out in your offer letter.

Three things break at this step, and we see all three.

The deposit arrives without the student reference, so it sits unallocated in a university account while the admissions portal still shows unpaid. Every UK institution publishes its payment reference format. Take it from the offer letter, not from a WhatsApp group, and confirm it appears on whatever your payer actually sends.

The deposit is paid out of the same account being used to prove maintenance funds, on day 20 of the 28. The clock resets, the applicant cannot apply for three more weeks, and the intake date does not move. Keep the two piles of money in separate accounts from the beginning.

The third is timing. Universities clear a deposit in two to five working days in June and considerably slower in the last two weeks of August, when every international student in the world is doing the same thing. Inside three weeks of enrolment, a bank wire should already be off your list.

Where do bitcoin and USDT fit in UK tuition payments?

Be clear about this, because the internet is full of nonsense on it. No UK university accepts bitcoin or USDT at the finance office. Your registrar wants pounds, in a UK account, against your student number.

What stablecoins actually do is solve the leg Cameroonian banking is worst at, which is moving value out of the country quickly at a known cost. A desk holding USDT can settle a UK invoice the same day because the international leg costs about a dollar on the Tron network whether the amount is 500 or 50,000. That structural advantage is the same one we described in our guide to paying school fees in Canada from Cameroon, and the network choice matters enormously: send on the wrong chain and the money is simply gone, which we explain in USDT TRC20 versus ERC20. Our buy USDT in Cameroon page covers the local mechanics.

There is a live reason to stress this today. On 20 August 2026 bitcoin jumped about 11.9% in a single session to roughly $71,970 after the US Securities and Exchange Commission announced proposed rules for crypto fundraising. Good news if you are holding. Terrible logic if you are funding a CAS deposit. Money that can move twelve percent in a day is not a tuition account, and it is not maintenance funds either, because a UKVI officer looks at a bank balance, not a wallet. Hold bitcoin with the money you will not need in September.

What goes wrong when Cameroonian families pay UK fees?

Four failures, every intake season.

The account holder is wrong. Maintenance funds must sit in the applicant's own account or a parent's account, and if it is a parent's you need the birth certificate and a signed letter of consent. Money in an uncle's account, a business account or a friend's account does not count, however genuine it is. This is the most common avoidable refusal we hear about on our WhatsApp line.

The 28 days were counted loosely. The money must be there for 28 consecutive days and the closing balance date must fall within 31 days of the application date. A dip below the required amount on any one of those days, including a bank charge that briefly takes you under, restarts everything.

The deadline was measured from the wrong point. Families count backwards from the fee date and forget that a bank wire's clock starts when the file is approved at the branch, not when it is submitted. Two weeks becomes four.

The intermediary is not real. Tuition season attracts impostors because the sums are large, the parents are anxious, and the sender has often never moved money internationally before. The patterns are identical to the ones in our post on how to verify a crypto trader before sending money, and the checks on our safety page apply exactly here. Anyone who will not give an all in price in francs upfront, cannot show a documented history, or pressures you because the rate moves in one hour is not who should be holding eight million francs of your family's money.

Once the visa is granted, the same rails book the ticket, and our flight booking page covers that side. Pay the university first. A flight can be moved. An enrolment deadline cannot.

FAQ

Can I pay UK university tuition directly with bitcoin or USDT?
No. UK universities invoice and receive in pounds sterling and none of them take crypto at the finance office. What stablecoins do is move value out of Cameroon quickly and cheaply so that a pound payment can be made on the other side, either by a desk that settles the invoice for you or by a relative already in the UK. The university itself never touches crypto.
How much money must I show for a UK student visa in 2026?
For courses outside London you must show £1,171 for each month of your course, capped at 9 months, so £10,539 in total. For courses in London it is £1,529 a month, capped at 9 months, so £13,761. Tuition you have already paid can be deducted if the university confirms it on your CAS. Add the visa fee and the health surcharge on top, and check the current figures on the official gov.uk pages before you file.
Does paying my tuition deposit reduce the maintenance funds I need to show?
Yes, but only if the university states the amount received on your CAS. A bank receipt on its own is not enough for a UKVI caseworker. Ask the international office to confirm the paid amount in writing on the CAS before you submit, because that one line can be worth several million francs of funds you no longer need to hold for 28 days.
How early should I start paying UK fees from Cameroon?
Allow two weeks of margin for a payment portal or a desk, and a full month for a bank wire. Then remember the 28 day funds rule sits before all of that. In practice a September intake means the maintenance money should be untouched in the right account by mid July at the latest.
What happens if my Cameroonian bank rejects the transfer?
Nothing is lost except time. The funds usually come back after several working days, minus any charges already applied, and you restart on a different route. This is the most common reason a Cameroonian family misses a UK deposit deadline, which is why a bank wire should never be your only plan inside the final three weeks.
