In this guide
To sell bitcoin in Cameroon and get paid to MoMo, you agree a rate with a buyer first, send the coin, and receive FCFA on your MTN Mobile Money or Orange Money number. You have three realistic routes: a P2P marketplace such as Binance P2P, a local OTC desk like ours, or a street trader in the market. A desk is normally the fastest, with the rate fixed on WhatsApp and MoMo credited in ten to thirty minutes for ordinary sizes. P2P looks cheaper on the screen until you count disputes, blocked wallets and the hours you spend waiting.
The mechanics are the easy part. Almost every loss we hear about comes from the order in which money moves, not from the technology. The story is always the same on WhatsApp: the seller released the bitcoin because the buyer sent a payment screenshot, and the FCFA never landed. Below is the exact sequence our desk uses, what selling really costs once you add MTN's cash out tariff, how long payouts take, and the daily MoMo ceilings that decide whether you sell in one go or in slices. For reference while you read, bitcoin is trading around 63,000 dollars on 29 July 2026, roughly 36 million FCFA per coin. Always check the live number on CoinGecko before you accept any quote.
What are your options to sell bitcoin in Cameroon?
There are four ways people actually do it here, and they are not equal.
| Route | Payout speed | What it really costs | Main risk | Practical size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local OTC desk | 10 to 30 minutes | One quoted spread, nothing hidden | Picking an unverified desk | Agreed in advance, large sizes fine |
| P2P marketplace | 15 minutes to several hours | Buyer's spread plus your time in disputes | Fake proof of payment, frozen MoMo | Limited by the buyer's balance |
| Street or market trader | Minutes, if he has cash | Widest spread we see, often 5 to 10 percent | No trace, no recourse at all | Whatever cash is in his bag |
| Crypto app with a card | Days, sometimes never | Card issuance, FX markup, ATM fee | KYC rejection, card blocked | Small, capped by card limits |
The OTC desk route wins for most people because it removes the two things that cost you money: negotiation and waiting. You get one number, you accept or you decline, and the payment leaves before you have finished your coffee. On P2P you match with a stranger who may take forty minutes to pay and then open a dispute. The street trader we quietly warn people away from: the spread is enormous, and because the trade leaves no record anywhere, nothing can be reconstructed if he disappears. The same four routes on the buying side are compared in our breakdown of the five ways to buy bitcoin in Cameroon.
Before you commit to anybody, check today's rates so you know what a fair quote looks like in FCFA. A buyer offering well above the market is not being generous. He is buying your trust cheaply.
How do you cash out bitcoin to MoMo step by step?
This is the sequence we run every day. Follow it in this order and very little can go wrong.
- Confirm the amount and the rate in writing. Not "market rate". A number, in FCFA, for a stated amount of BTC, valid for a stated number of minutes.
- Give the MoMo number and the exact registered name on it. Mismatched names are the most common cause of a failed or reversed payout.
- Wait for the FCFA first with anyone new. A serious buyer pays first on small and medium sizes. Our desk does this without being asked.
- Open your MoMo app or dial the USSD code yourself. Never accept a screenshot or a forwarded SMS as proof. Check your own balance.
- Only then send the bitcoin. Paste the address, then check the first four and last four characters against the original message.
- Save the transaction ID and the chat. Two minutes of record keeping settles most later arguments.
If your size is above roughly 500,000 FCFA, say so at the start. Ceilings and payout method change at that point, and a desk will plan a split or a bank transfer instead of discovering the problem halfway. You can get a live quote on WhatsApp and tell us the size before you move any coin.
How much does it cost to sell BTC to mobile money?
Two costs, and most people only see one of them.
The first is the spread, the gap between the international price and the price a local buyer gives you in FCFA. It exists because the buyer carries the FCFA liquidity problem, and it is where every buyer in the country makes their money. On P2P you will typically see a few percent, more when liquidity is tight at month end. A desk quotes one number that already contains the spread, so what you are told is what lands.
The second is MTN's own cash out tariff, which only applies if you withdraw physical cash at an agent. As of July 2026, MTN Cameroon's published MoMo tariff schedule charges a flat 54 FCFA on withdrawals from 100 to 4,166 FCFA, then 1 percent of the amount plus taxes from 4,167 to 333,332 FCFA, then a flat 4,004 FCFA up to the 500,000 FCFA per transaction cash out ceiling. Fees change, so check the page rather than trusting any article, including this one.
Here is what that means in practice. Sell bitcoin worth 300,000 FCFA and the payout lands on your MoMo wallet at no extra cost to you. Walk to an agent and take it out as notes, and that same 300,000 costs you roughly 3,600 FCFA in withdrawal fee and tax. If the money is going to pay a bill, buy airtime or move to another MoMo wallet anyway, leave it electronic. We watch people burn thousands of francs a month withdrawing cash they were about to send back into the system.
There is a third cost people forget: time. Two hours arguing with a P2P counterparty over a 200,000 FCFA order is not free, it is just unbilled.
How long does a MoMo payout actually take?
For a normal sized trade with a desk, ten to thirty minutes end to end is realistic. The bitcoin confirmation is usually the slow part, not the MoMo transfer, which is close to instant once triggered.
Three things stretch that. Network congestion turns a five minute confirmation into forty if you underpay the miner fee, so let your wallet pick a standard fee, not the cheapest. MoMo has outages, normally short, and nobody can do anything during one except wait. And FCFA liquidity thins out late at night, on Sundays and around the 28th to the 2nd when everybody is paying salaries and rent. Selling 2 million FCFA at 11pm on a Sunday takes longer than the same trade on a Tuesday morning.
This is one of the quiet arguments for stablecoins. A USDT transfer settles in under a minute for about a dollar, which is why our comparison of bitcoin and USDT recommends USDT for any money with a deadline attached.
How much can you receive on MoMo in one day?
The hard number to plan around is the 500,000 FCFA per transaction cash out limit at an agent. Wallet balance and daily transfer ceilings depend on how fully your line is registered, and MTN and Orange treat a fully identified account very differently from a lightly registered one.
Practically: trades under 500,000 FCFA land in one push. Between 500,000 and about 2 million they get split across transfers, sometimes across an MTN and an Orange number, which is why we ask for both. Above that a bank transfer is cleaner, and worth planning a day ahead rather than improvising at the moment of sale.
Do not solve a ceiling by borrowing somebody else's MoMo number. Money arriving on a wallet that does not match the seller's name is exactly the pattern that gets accounts restricted, and you will then be arguing with an operator instead of counting your money. Our buy bitcoin with MoMo page explains the same name matching logic in the opposite direction.
What goes wrong when people sell bitcoin for MoMo?
Five patterns account for nearly everything our desk sees.
The fake payment screenshot is the classic. A forged MoMo confirmation image costs nothing to make and looks real on a small phone screen. The only defence is checking your own balance in your own app, every single time.
The reversal request comes next. You are paid, you send the coin, then the buyer claims he paid by mistake and asks you to return the FCFA to a different number. Once the bitcoin is gone, you owe nothing. Stop replying.
Third party payment is the sneaky one. The FCFA arrives from a name that is not the buyer's. That can mean you have just received the proceeds of somebody else's fraud, and your number is now attached to it. Refuse it, however convincing the explanation.
The last two are pressure and thin air. Real buyers do not need the coin before the money on a first trade, so urgency is a tool. And a profile with no history, no verifiable business and no willingness to take a phone call is not a buyer. Our safety guide and our page on MoMo scams in Cameroon cover the verification steps in full.
None of this is illegal territory. Holding and trading crypto is not prohibited for individuals here, as we set out in our guide to whether bitcoin is legal in Cameroon. It is simply unregulated, so no authority will recover your money for you. Our about page says exactly who runs this desk and where.
