To convert USDT TRC20 to ERC20, send your USDT from your wallet to an exchange on the Tron network, wait for it to be credited, then withdraw the same balance to your Ethereum address on the ERC20 network. That is the simplest route for most people in Cameroon. A published comparison from October 2026 puts it at about 2 to 5 dollars and 5 to 15 minutes. A cross-chain bridge is the other route, usually at 5 to 15 dollars on a small transfer, with more ways to go wrong.

Before you do either, ask one question: does the receiver really need ERC20? Many times the answer is no. On our desk, the most common reason people want to convert is a misunderstanding, not a real requirement. Someone sees "USDT" on a platform and assumes Ethereum, or a contact sends an 0x address because that is the only one they copied. If the receiver can take TRC20, stay on TRC20 and pay nothing extra. Below: the steps, the true costs, the bridge scams to watch for, and the cases where converting is the wrong move.

Can you convert USDT TRC20 to ERC20 directly in your wallet?

Not in the way most people imagine. TRC20 USDT and ERC20 USDT are two separate tokens on two separate networks. Tron and Ethereum do not talk to each other. You cannot press a button that changes the token where it sits, and you cannot send from a Tron address straight to an Ethereum address.

What actually happens is an exchange of value. You give up USDT on Tron, and a service gives you USDT on Ethereum. That service is either an exchange, which holds both, or a bridge, which uses a smart contract or a pool of funds. If a wallet shows you a "swap" from Tron USDT to Ethereum USDT, it is sending you through one of those services behind the screen. Check who is behind it and what fee it shows before you approve.

How do you convert USDT from TRC20 to ERC20 on an exchange?

This route is the one we suggest to anyone who already has a verified exchange account. Opening a new account only for this can take longer than the whole transfer, because of identity checks.

  1. Copy your ERC20 address first. In your wallet, open the Ethereum version of USDT and copy the address. It starts with 0x and has 42 characters. In Trust Wallet it appears as a separate entry from the Tron one.
  2. Generate a TRC20 deposit address on the exchange. Choose USDT, then choose the Tron network. The address starts with T.
  3. Send a small test from your wallet. Five or ten dollars is enough. You need a little TRX in the wallet to pay the Tron fee.
  4. Wait until the exchange credits it. Check that the balance appears, not only that the transaction left your wallet.
  5. Send the rest, then wait for that credit too.
  6. Withdraw and choose ERC20 as the network. Paste your 0x address. Check the first four and last four characters against the original.
  7. Read the fee on the withdrawal screen before you confirm. This is the number that counts. It is set by the platform and can change.
  8. Confirm the arrival yourself by looking up the transaction on a block explorer or checking your wallet balance.

How much does it cost to convert USDT TRC20 to ERC20?

Fees move, so treat these as a guide and always read the live fee on the screen. The figures below come from the comparison linked above, which is a vendor's own guide, so check them against your platform. The FCFA amounts are rough, at about 600 FCFA to the dollar.

First, the network fee and the platform fee are not the same thing. Ethereum's network was very quiet when we checked in early November 2026. The Etherscan gas tracker showed about 0.05 gwei, which works out to well under a dollar for a normal token transfer. That can jump when the network gets busy. But the exchange's withdrawal fee does not always fall with it, so a quiet network does not guarantee a cheap withdrawal.

Second, the percentage cost depends on your size. Converting 20 dollars at 2 to 5 dollars total loses 10 to 25 percent, which is a terrible deal. Converting 1,000 dollars at the same cost loses 0.2 to 0.5 percent, which is fine if the conversion is truly needed.

When should you not convert USDT to ERC20 at all?

This is where most people can save money. Do not convert in these five cases.

The receiver accepts TRC20. Ask directly: "Can you receive USDT on Tron? Here is the question in writing, please confirm." Suppliers in China usually prefer Tron anyway, as our guide to paying China suppliers explains. Do not assume, and do not let a copied 0x address decide for you.

The amount is small. Under about 50 dollars, the fee takes too much of the money. Look for another way to pay, or wait until the amount is bigger.

You only want to sell it. You do not need ERC20 to get FCFA. We buy and sell USDT in Cameroon and pay above the market rate, on average about 20 FCFA more per USDT, to MoMo, Orange Money or a bank account. Tell us which network your USDT is on before you send, and use only the address we confirm for that network. Our guide on how to sell USDT in Cameroon covers the steps, and you can compare the numbers on today's rates.

You are buying USDT for a specific payment. If you know the receiver needs a specific network, say so before you buy. It is cheaper to start on the right network than to fix it afterwards. If you want to check the network and the FCFA total before you pay, get a live quote on WhatsApp.

A stranger told you to. "Your USDT must be upgraded to ERC20 before you can withdraw" is not a real rule. Neither is "pay a conversion fee to unlock your funds". We hear versions of this from people caught in fake investment groups. Stop, send nothing, and read our safety guide.

Are USDT bridges safe to use from Cameroon?

A real bridge can work, but this is the route where we would be most careful, especially for a first-timer. Tron has fewer bridge options than Ethereum-based networks, and that gap creates room for fake sites. Security trackers have flagged look-alike "Tron bridge" pages this year that exist to empty your wallet.

The danger is the approval step. A bridge asks you to sign a permission so its contract can move your USDT. A fake site asks for the same signature, then takes everything that permission covers. You will not see a warning, and nobody can reverse it.

If you use a bridge anyway, follow these rules:

There is also a trap in your transaction history. Scammers send tiny transfers from addresses that look almost the same as ones you have used. This is called address poisoning. If you copy from your history, you may paste their address. Always copy from the original source, not from past transactions.

What can go wrong after you convert?

Two problems catch people right after a successful conversion.

No ETH for the next move. Your ERC20 USDT arrives, but sending it onward requires ETH to pay the fee. A wallet holding only USDT can receive but not send. If you plan to send it again, make sure you have a little ETH there first.

Below the minimum withdrawal. Exchanges set a minimum for each network. If your balance after fees falls under it, the money sits there until you add more. Check the minimum before your deposit.

FAQ

Can I send TRC20 USDT directly to an ERC20 address?
No. A Tron address starts with T and an Ethereum address starts with 0x, and a normal Tron transfer cannot deliver to an Ethereum address. To move value across, you need an exchange or a bridge that operates on both networks. Good wallets reject the wrong format, but never rely on that protection. Check the address and the network yourself.
What is the cheapest way to convert USDT TRC20 to ERC20?
Usually a transfer through an exchange where your account is already verified, at about 2 to 5 dollars in total according to published fee comparisons. The cheapest option of all is not to convert, by asking the receiver to accept TRC20. The live withdrawal fee on your platform is the final number, so read it before you confirm.
Is ERC20 USDT safer than TRC20 USDT?
Not in the way that matters to most people. Both are issued by Tether, and both are worth one dollar on the same promise. Moving to Ethereum does not reduce the risk of holding USDT. Converting also adds a fee and more chances for a mistake, so do it only when a receiver or platform truly requires ERC20.
