In this guide
A safe first bitcoin purchase in Cameroon comes down to ten checks, and all of them happen before or just after you pay. Start with a small amount, about 10,000 FCFA. Use a wallet you control. Verify the seller through their official number. Pay from a MoMo or Orange Money line in your own name. Get the rate, the BTC amount and the payment number in writing. Then confirm the coin yourself on a public block explorer before you buy more.
The order matters because mobile money transfers are final. Once your FCFA lands, only the person who received it can send it back. So nearly all of your protection comes before you enter your PIN. Our desk has run this process since 2018, starting in Buea, and every week we still hear from someone who paid a "trader" from a Facebook or Telegram group and got nothing. Those losses are not about being unlucky. A skipped check is usually where they start. Here is the full list, in the order you should do it.
What should you do before your first bitcoin purchase?
The first four checks need no money and no seller. Do them at home, without anyone rushing you.
1. Choose an amount you can leave alone
Bitcoin's price moves every day. As of 6 November 2026, it was down about 3 percent in 24 hours, near 44.7 million FCFA per coin on CoinGecko. You do not need to buy a whole coin. At that market price, 10,000 FCFA buys about 0.0002 BTC before any desk margin. Never use rent, school fees or money you need next week. Buying on a rumor with money you cannot leave alone is one of the most common mistakes we see.
2. Decide whether you really want Bitcoin
Some first-time buyers ask for Bitcoin when what they really want is to save in dollars or pay a supplier. For that, USDT is usually the better fit because it is designed to stay near 1 US dollar. Bitcoin suits someone who accepts big price swings. Read Bitcoin vs USDT in Cameroon if you are unsure. It costs nothing to decide now, and it can save you from selling in a panic later.
3. Set up a wallet you control
A wallet is a free app that gives you an address for receiving coin. Download it only from the official app store, and check the developer name first. Our Trust Wallet setup guide takes about ten minutes. If you have never done this, tell us and we will walk you through it for free before you buy. You should not need to leave your coin on someone else's platform "for convenience".
4. Write your recovery phrase on paper
Your wallet shows you 12 words when you create it. Those words are the wallet. Write them on paper and store the paper somewhere safe. Do not screenshot them, and do not save them in WhatsApp or email. Nobody needs them to send you Bitcoin: not a seller, not "support", not us. If someone asks, stop talking to them. The Bitcoin.org wallet security guide is a good second read on backups.
How do you choose a safe Bitcoin seller in Cameroon?
Most losses start here, so this part deserves more time than the payment itself.
5. Verify the seller outside the chat
A real trader has years of history, public pages and clients who can vouch for them. A scammer has a new account and a lot of urgency. Never pay a number you found in a group chat or a comment. Find the seller's official site or page yourself, then compare the number. For us, that one number is +237 673 259 112, and it is the same number on every page of this site. Our guide on how to verify a crypto trader has the longer version.
Be careful with rates too. A rate far above the market is bait, because nobody can sustain it. A desk may pay a small premium: ours buys above the market rate, about 20 FCFA more per $1 on average. But a wild number that disappears as soon as your money moves is a warning, not a deal. You can compare any quote against our current rates.
6. Pay only from a line in your own name
The name on the payment should match the person trading. Third-party payments are how stolen money moves, and the person whose line was used can end up with the blocked account. Students paying from a parent's line and people using a partner's SIM are the cases we see most. If you are the buyer, use your own registered line. If a seller says "that is my brother's account", treat it as a refusal to prove who they are. We explain the risk in why P2P trades freeze MoMo accounts.
What should you check before you send the money?
You are now ready to talk about a real trade. These two checks keep a small problem from becoming a lost payment.
7. Check your limits and the fee
As of November 2026, MTN MoMo allows up to 1,000,000 FCFA per transfer and Orange Money allows up to 500,000 FCFA. Your first test will sit well below both. Sending inside the same network costs only the state levy: 0.2 percent plus 4 FCFA, which is 24 FCFA on 10,000. Crossing networks costs far more, so ask which network the receiving line is on. Full tables are in our guides to MTN MoMo limits and Orange Money fees. Your own line may have a lower limit, so check it on your handset.
8. Get the full quote in writing
Before any money moves, you should have these four things in the chat: the rate, the exact BTC amount you will receive, the FCFA total, and the number to pay. A quoted rate lasts only a short time because Bitcoin keeps moving, usually the few minutes you need to pay. If anyone gives you a new number halfway through, stop. A legitimate seller will confirm it in the original thread and give you time to check it. Ready to try it? Get a live quote on WhatsApp and we will take you through each step. | Stage | What a real seller does | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| First contact | Answers questions and lets you check them | Pushes you to go big now |
| Rate | Written, close to market | Far above market |
| Wallet | Asks only for your receiving address | Asks for your 12 words or PIN |
| Payment number | Same number, matching name | New number or "my brother's account" |
| Delivery | Sends a transaction ID you can check | Sends only a screenshot, or asks for a "release fee" |
How do you send the payment and confirm your Bitcoin?
The last two checks take five minutes. Do not skip them just because the trade is small. That first small trade is your rehearsal for every larger one.
9. Copy, paste and compare
Tap Receive on the Bitcoin screen in your wallet, then copy the address. A Bitcoin address usually starts with bc1, 1 or 3. Paste it into the chat, and compare the first and last four characters with your wallet. Do not type it by hand. When you send your MoMo payment, check the name on the confirmation screen before you enter your PIN. Send once. If a transfer sits pending, wait instead of sending it again. Paying twice for one trade is much harder to fix than waiting.
10. Confirm the coin yourself
After your payment lands, ask for the transaction ID. Paste it into any public block explorer, such as mempool.space, and check that the amount and your address match. A new Bitcoin block arrives about every 10 minutes on average, so the first confirmation can take a little time. You do not have to rely on the seller's word, because the network is the receipt. Save the ID with your payment SMS. Only after this should you consider a larger amount.
If you bought from us, the steps are laid out on our buy Bitcoin with MoMo page.
What happens after you receive your coin?
Two habits matter from here. First, keep your records: the chat quote, the MoMo SMS and the transaction ID. Second, know your exit before you need it. You can sell Bitcoin for FCFA through the same MoMo or Orange Money rail, in reverse. Our guide to selling bitcoin and getting paid to MoMo shows how it works.
There is also the question of the law. Our reading is that private individuals can hold and trade Bitcoin in Cameroon, but it is unregulated and at your own risk. No regulator will step in if a trade goes wrong, which is why this checklist matters. See is Bitcoin legal in Cameroon for the details. And before you trade with anyone, including us, read our safety rules.
